Pack it out. Bring it back.

Out & Back keeps packing and return checks separate. Mark reusable things Comes back and consumables Used up, pack the items you need, and review them at Ready to go. The Back list freezes the reusable items you packed. Later edits to the source list do not change that trip’s saved Back roster.

In Back, check each item as it comes home. Check the whole packed amount shown on its row. Returning a bag does not check its contents. Used up items stay outside Back. Packing checks keeps the original record.

Try the example

In the welcome screen, choose Try an example and pack Charger, Jacket and Snack. Tap Ready to go, then Run the Back check now.
If you skipped welcome, choose Try an example on Out & Back Home and pack the same three items. Tap Leaving? Start the Back check, review what comes home, then Ready to go. The Back check opens.
Still out is 2 because Snack is Used up. Mark Charger Back to make it 1; mark Jacket Back to make it 0.
Open Packing checks to see all three original checks. Finish the outing to keep its return results in history.

No account, location permission or special hardware is required. Skip in onboarding opens the honest Home screen; Find a checklist opens Discover.

When something is not coming back

Use Not coming back for an item you lost, left behind or deliberately will not bring home, and confirm the choice. It stays visible in history. You can finish once every return item is either Back or explicitly Not coming back. A trip with missing items does not say everything came back.

Optional leave reminders

In Back check, choose Remind me when I leave here. Name the place, tap Save this place, allow While Using location, review the approximate 150-meter area, then confirm and allow notifications. Saving an outing area does not replace your separate saved home area. Only one Back-area reminder can be armed at a time; replacing it is an explicit choice.

The notice says, for example, “1 item was still out at your last check. Open your Back list.” It contains no item names or notes. A pending notice updates after a Back change and cancels at zero. A delivered older notice may have an older count; opening it goes to the outing’s current Back check.

iOS controls exit detection and notification delivery. Focus, permission settings and system timing can delay or silence a notice. Always check important items yourself. Run the Back check now works without a reminder. Reminder preview shows the saved message and schedules nothing.

Location or notifications are denied

Use Open iPhone Settings to change permission, then return and deliberately retry Save this place. Retry is also available when the location fix is too old or inaccurate. If a reminder is not accepted, it stays Not scheduled. Manual packing and Back checks still work.

I left the area but did not receive a notice

Check that the intended outing’s reminder says Scheduled, that notifications and While Using location are allowed, and that Focus permits delivery. iOS detects an area boundary rather than an exact doorway and can delay a notice. Already being outside the saved area does not guarantee a notice for an earlier crossing. Open the Back check manually and save or confirm a new area when appropriate.

Lists and outings

Discover has original starter lists you can preview and take as private editable copies. My Lists lets you resume an outing or start fresh. Home has an outing chooser when more than one is active, so you can switch between packing and Back trips. Existing finished outings keep their original history; the update does not invent return checks.

Backups and recovery

In Settings, save a complete backup to Files. It can include local photos and saved reminder areas. Choose where to keep it and protect it. The app reviews a restore before saving it; Cancel keeps the accepted records. Restored area reminders require fresh confirmation and stay off until you choose to enable them.

The separate optional account backup contains user-entered checklist records and preferences, including packing and return checks. It excludes photos and saved home or outing locations, even in Recently Deleted. It is a backup, not live collaboration or automatic iCloud checklist sync. Keep a Files backup of records that matter.

Accounts, supporters and appearance

Every feature is free and works without an account. Settings → Account offers email or Sign in with Apple, separate optional beta and marketing choices, sign-out and account deletion. Deleting the account removes its server backups across our apps and keeps local records on this iPhone.

Settings → Remove ads offers weekly, monthly and annual supporter options, Restore and Manage. Supporter payments remove promotion screens; they do not unlock checklist features. See the purchase screen for current prices and renewal terms, and use Manage for Apple’s subscription controls. There are no ads in the first 24 hours after installation.

Settings → Appearance lets you choose the theme and text size. Add the Out & Back widget from your iPhone’s Home Screen widget picker. It shows your saved packing or return progress in blue and brass. A small widget can say “Lake cabin: 1 thing still to bring home”; a medium widget adds your packing checks and Home → Stay → Home route. Tap it to open that outing’s current check. When no outing is active, it offers a saved checklist to start. In Back, it opens the app and does not mark return items itself. Lock Screen widgets hide names by default. Settings → Show details in widgets explicitly allows outing and item names, which anyone looking at your Lock Screen could read. Turning this on does not add item names to leave reminders.

Privacy and important information

Read the privacy policy for optional account backup, RevenueCat purchase and device-identifier information, and Sentry diagnostics. Lists are starting points, not safety guarantees. Check current travel rules and important items yourself. Do not rely on reminders alone for time-critical needs.
